My dog eats too fast, it's bad for them, how I can slow down?
My big dog (German Shepard mix) eat too Quick, let's feed her about 2 cups each morning, and she attacks the bowl and ends in about 10-15 seconds. I heard that this may cause twisting of the stomach, a severe and sometimes fatal condition. How I can go more slowly?
Yes, this can cause swelling hun! Bloat, also known as Torton stomach, a condition is rapidly fatal in deep-chested dogs (such as my German shepherd and holy and Newfs!), causing shock, coma and death 6-12 hours. These are the symptoms of swelling: anxiety major abdominal swelling after meals heavy salivating whining rate nausea vomiting strong concern dry wheezing shallow breathing weak pulse beat with excessive color (blue, dark red, white) gums are affected dogs beginning some of the above symptoms and are not interested in food or water. After 30-60 minutes the dog begins to appear swollen in its midsection due to accumulation of gas in the stomach that begin to pant hard and breathing becomes rapid and shallow. Note that the nausea and vomiting is unproductive ALWAYS! If your dog shows any of the above symptoms should be watched carefully and taken to a veterinarian immediately. To take pictures of the abdomen to confirm diagnosis immediately. Here are some things I can do to prevent swelling of my dogs: * I NEVER allow my dogs to play or exercise for 30 minutes before feeding. * I can give my dogs 3 smaller meals a day (frequent meals are preferred). * Never put all your food on their plates in a single meeting. For example, suppose that feed my saints 2 cups of food at each meal. Never pour 2 cups total! Instead, I pour about 1 / 4 cup at a time. Let them eat and then wait a few minutes to give them another 1 / 4 cup. I trained my Newfs Santos and to sit and wait patiently in front of his bowl feed between sessions. It takes a total of 3-5 minutes to feed my dogs every meal. "I can stretch as long as possible! * No water directly before eating and without water for an hour after eating! An ice cube or two is fine. * I box all my dogs for a full hour after eating to avoid to be playing and exercising. It's like their "siesta" time! * DO NOT use high containers! That allows more air into the stomach! * I do not do this, but I have a friend with GSD to do this: you put a large stone (large enough so they can not pick it up, swallowing Nevermind!) in the center of your plate when is introduced. This slows down their dogs because they have to try to eat around the rock. Basically, take into account the symptoms and always call your vet, even if you are not sure if it swells! You will not be safe than sorry! NOTE: PLEASE, never add water to the kibble! That will expand the food ... that causes swelling!
