what supplies would you need for a shih tzu dog?
i am going to get a shih tzu next week and was wondering what supplies i would need. so far, i have:
-high quality Dog Food (please suggest what kind)
-a collar and tag
-stainless steal dog bowls
-a bed
-a leash
-cleaning equipment (just in case, the dog will be about 3 years old)
-toys
-dog shampoo/conditioner (please suggest what kind)
-grooming tools (what kind?)
i just don't know what medication and such i should get so please help? and i don't know if i should get a vet right away or after i get the dog? is there anything else i should get? and how to prepare for a shih tzu?
Considering a shih tzu's size, your best bet for food would be Acana. Don't go for the Small Breed Adult, I don't find there are enough viable meat sources. Grasslands and Prairie Harvest are the best from Acana. While there are definitely higher quality foods out there, many of the "6-star" dog foods just have too much protein for a little shih tzu.
You'll need to buy some of the dog's regular food, and wean it off of that on to the new food. (3/4 old, 1/4 new food for 2 or 3 days, 1/2 and 1/2 for two or three days,1/4 old and 3/4 new for a few days, then 100% new food)

Over the years I've experimented with many different kinds of shampoos and conditioners, and have had the best results across the board with Tropiclean. It smells delicious, and the shampoos are soap-free, which is much gentler on the skin, as they use natural cleansers. Using a shampoo and a conditioner separately is much more effective than using a 2-in-1.
For grooming, you should only worry yourself about regular brushing. Leave the actual clipping and trimming to a professional. For brushing, you need a fine comb (use this first to get out any knots and tangles), a slicker brush (use this next, it gets out all the dead hair and the little tiny minor tangles), and a nylon brush or a pin brush (like the one we use for our hair- these are just to smooth out the coat after and make it nice and shiny).
Shih tzus are notorious for tear stains, so pick up some tear stain remover solution and some cotton pads (the ones used to remove makeup are perfect), and ear cleaning solution. Unless your shih tzu has a problem with ear infections, you only need to clean the ears twice a month. Too much cleaning increases wax production, creating the problem you were trying to prevent.
It's always easier to have a vet picked out before bringing an animal home. Set up an appointment for a checkup, so that your vet can become acquainted with your dog. They'll do a full examination and that's the best time to bring up any questions you have.
As for medication, unless your dog is ill, I'm not sure what type of medication you're referring to.
