My puppy keeps nipping my older dog?
both pits. puppy is about 3 months old. older dog is about a year and a half. my older dog is so gentle and nice to the puppy, he plays with her the way dogs do, with teeth and light mouthing.. but never hurts her (she doesn't yelp or whine)... but SHE always nips at his lips, arms and ears when they are running around playing. He never complains, but it is bothering ME horribly. My dog has now got quite a few cuts that i'm sure may end up scaring... i don't want him to look like a fighter and it's getting to the point where it may become that way >_>; Now that i know this behavior is causing damage to the skin i am clapping my hands together and correcting the pup whenever she nips, and i stop my dog from the mouthing too.. She has chew toys but she still goes for his lips when they play together.. is there anything else i can do to stop her? i'm not with them 24/7, but it's seeming that's going to be the only way -_-; Also, when do older dogs stop giving pups so much leeway?
Usually, they get tired of the nipping around 4-6months.
I'm not really sure how you would stop it otherwise, but I know how you feel.
One word of advice, NEVER let them roughhouse inside. It gets very hard to break them of it. I'm CONSTANTLY having to corral the dogs and make them go outside, they sit at the door and when I let them back in, they start all over again. When everything settles down here and I get to go back to obedience, I'm going to address it with them. Right now, I'm kind of at a loss.
My poor fawn girl has such a thin coat, it doesn't give her much protection with cuts and scrapes. She looks BEAT UP! I wish there was something I could do about it now, but I think it may be too late. Some places her hair is growing back, other places... I'm not sure it will.
I think she has particularly thin skin too. She's always getting DEEP cuts and scrapes, she's actually TORN her side 4 times. I don't think it's just the lack of coat either.
