The effect of Michael Vick. No dog fights lead to breed specific legislation?
Have you heard of breed specific legislation? Breed specific legislation is the enactment of laws that deal only with specific breeds. For example, in some areas of the world, are not Pit Bull legal. Other areas of the world call the Rottweiler will only be allowed on the street while carrying a muzzle. Is it just breed specific legislation?
Breed specific legislation (or BSL) should concern many of you. If you are the owner of a Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, American Staffordshire Terrier, Chow Chow, Presa Canario or a race in any other there is the possibility that BSL is in the works in your community to limit their property rights with respect to these races. But why does this happen?
If we were to analyze the root cause of BSL think we can get it basically boils down to two main sources.
1. irresponsible dog owners. For those of you who have been following the case of Michael Vick in recent times you know that there are dog owners do incredibly stupid things with their dogs. Mike Vick has admitted his involvement in dogfighting and rings in the brutal murder of several pit bulls. It's a horrible thing what he did. His life is forever affected by their murderous actions. Unfortunately, the lives of many pit bulls will also be affected because this plant news more evidence in the public mind that Pit Bulls are vicious creatures.
Vick's case is just the latest. We have seen many stories over the years from Pit Bull or Rottweiler maulings attacks. At the root of all cases are irresponsible dog owners who have created monsters due to lack of socialization, training, and poor parenting practices.
2. irresponsible media reporting. The media likes to put a sensationalist story News. Rarely get the facts right, however. Recently a story out of the estate of Hollywood actor Ving Rhames. It was reported that a manager care of their property was brutally murdered by actor dogs. The media around the world picked up the story and reported that this man had been brutally attacked and killed several of the dogs Rhames. That was not the case. A few days later came the real story. When animal control arrived on the scene found the dead man surrounded by dogs. Examination of the body showed scratches surface of the skin that occurs when the dogs were sniffing and investigating the man. The caretaker had died of a heart attack and the dogs were just trying to wake the man.
Did you know that some of the worst breeds for biting children Poodles and Cocker Spaniel? You will not hear about it in the news because it is not sensational enough. The reality is that any dog poorly trained and poorly socialized can bite. The media only report, however, if the dog in question is of a particular race.
So it's just BSL? " As long as There are irresponsible dog owners believe that there must be laws to prevent these animals from harming us and our children. As public, however, we must be a tool to guide legislation to ensure that good dog owners with good dogs are not grouped with the bad.
