Councils to adopt a Pitbull

Dear Adam:

I bought his book for about 5 months, and I expect it to be "right" for my advice. First, let me say I am very satisfied with my purchase. Not only give advice on specific techniques, but more importantly, explains the foundation of all training - timing, motivation, coherence - which allows the dog owner to better understand the training process. In addition, does a very good job of explaining that dogs are pack animals - and will test the leadership of the alpha is at various times (in my case, all the time) - and the way in which factors in the formation. Finally, I like your common sense, for example, "stay" is a double command, if not the dog supposed to break, you feel or are without the release command, why do we have to tell it to stay.

My question is about dog training, however, but on the breeds of dogs. In particular, APBTs [American Pit Bull Terriers] and AmStaffs Staffordshire [American Terriers]. The AKC does not recognize the APBT as a breed, however, Many fans recognize the two dogs as animals of different species, although they share a common origin and look very similar. Or, if not separate races, two "strains" of the same race, AmStaff being raised to "show" and APBT being bred for "performance" - is, the original gameness of the dogs has been largely outside AmStaffs race, but still remains in APBTs. I like to hear your opinion on this issue since you own property and have APBTs or mixtures thereof.

The reason I ask is that I'm considering getting a Bull Terrier AmStaff or Personal. My wife and I currently own a Dalmatian, however, so I'm a little worried by two to get along, especially when I'm not. Should I stay away from these races? I had a breeder tell me that would be fine if the staff is presented as a dog, while another said he would never leave me alone. What would be your recommendation (I realize all dogs are individuals and may have different characteristics others of the same race)?

Thanks,
Ryan Fehlig

Dear Ryan:

Thanks for the kind words. You've asked an excellent question!

I love the bull breeds, personally. And while everything you've said is more or less "right on the money," ... I would suggest that if you decide to take one of these races will ensure that:

1. The dog is taking is the opposite sex of the dog you already own.

2. If the dog is a male, then it hits neutral before sexual maturity. (Before 1 year of age.)

3. If the other dog is a male, then definitely the neutral. (Although this not be a "cure-all" that can help a little.)

It's true ... many of the dogs of this breed seem to have a genetic basis for aggression dog. I do not think out of the matrix is dog aggressive, but have characteristics of temperament that tend to make more aggressive dog. (That is, the domain and strong defensive).

As for the difference between the APBT and AmStaff, the difference is largely registration. (AKC vs UKC). And yes, the version AKC has been raised with more of an emphasis on the formation (as all AKC breeds).

If I had to take a different breed of bulls, it would probably Staffordshire Bull Terrier (the smallest of the pit bull "breeds). I like the idea of having a big dog in a small package. But to be honest, I'm really tired media of the stigma that this race has received. As for real life, it means that having a dog that can never be off leash in a park - not because the dog is dangerous or not qualified - but rather because people are so damn afraid of what the media has led them to believe about this race, who steal their children and run screaming from the park.

On the positive side, this stigma can work in your favor, too. Most criminals know that a pit bull " is the type of dog that does not want to live in the house that is about to steal.

Personally, had a character that allowed her to run off-leash Rottweiler in the park I used to train a. This dog had a bad attitude and was a very dominant dog-aggressive. The owner was under the impression that your dog was trained. Would several commands, for example, "Ranger come, come, come, come ,'... but all Ranger would do is engage the dogs of my clients and trying to start a dogfight.

Well, after the adoption of Forbes (APBT-a mix that resembles a large muscle and is almost as wide as a Mack truck) and started to carry it in a down-stay while I was working with the dogs of my clients ... their Ranger suddenly started to take his dog in a much shorter leash. If he did not grant his dog on a leash as soon as I saw her go into the park, then he will definitely run to grab your dog the moment he saw that Ranger was not going away and coming back whenever.

I guess that's what you call the motivation, eh?

Yes ... is likely to be a macho thing. But if there is a stigma, you might as well use it to your advantage to encourage irresponsible dog owners with dogs trained to keep their pooches on a leash.

That's all for now friends!
Adam
