Stop aggressive dog behavior, Part 1
This is known as resource protection, and although it may seem innocuous, there's really much more going on here your dog simply trying to maintain itself croquettes. - He is not comfortable with the treatment and handling than it receives from you or other members family. What's taking care resources? Resource protection is fairly common among dogs. The term refers to too possessive behavior on behalf your dog: for instance, snarling at you if approached while eating, or giving the "eye" (a flinty-eyed, direct gaze) where it reaches his hand to take a toy away from him. All dogs can be possessive from time to time - is in its nature.
Sometimes they're possessive over things with no conceivable value: inedible trash, a ball with pieces of paper or tissue, old socks. More often, however, resource-guarding becomes an issue more articles with a very real and understandable value: food and toys. Why does it happen? It all comes down to the question of domination. Let me take a moment to explain this concept: dogs are pack animals. This means they are accustomed to a very structured environment: in a dog-pack, each animal is ranked in a hierarchy of position and power (or "domain") in connection with any other animal.
Each animal is aware of the range of any other animal, which means he knows specifically how to act in a given situation (whether to turn back, either to push the issue, either in the muscle or not a person of another lawn, etc etc). For his dog, the family environment is no different to the environment of the dog-pack. Your dog has ranked each member of the family, and has its own perception of where he ranks in that environment environment.
Here is where it gets interesting: if your dog perceives himself as higher up the social totem that members of the family, it will come boldly. If he really has an overinflated sense of self-importance, begin to act aggressively. Why? Because dominance and aggression are the rights exclusive of a higher animal in the standings. Do not ever show predominantly weaker aggression or an act of a higher ranking animal (the consequences would be terrible, and he knows it!) Resource protection is a classic example of dominant behavior: only a higher-ranked dog (a "dominant" dog) would act aggressively in defense of resources. To put it plainly: if it is clear to your dog that is not, in fact, the family leader, who had not even dream of trying to stop taking his food or toys - because a lower-ranking dog (him) always agree with what the higher-ranking dogs (you and your family) say.
So what I can do about it? The best treatment for dominant, aggressive behavior is consistent, the frequent obedience work, which will emphasize their authority over your dog. In just two sessions of fifteen minutes a day to make it perfectly clear to your dog that you are the boss, and it's worth doing what you say. You can make this fact clear to him, rewarding him (with treats and praise) for obeying a command, and isolating him (putting him in "timeout, either outdoors or in a room by himself) for misbehavior. - If you are unsure of doing it yourself, you may want to consider obtaining the support of a qualified dog trainer. - Put your understanding of canine psychology and communication, so you can understand what you are trying to say - This will help to nip any dominant behaviors in the bud, and to communicate with its authority more effectively - Train regularly: keep obedience sessions short and productive (No more than fifteen minutes - maybe two or three of these a day). Why does my dog to be handled?
All dogs have different treatment thresholds. Some dogs, like a lot of hugs, and are perfectly content to be hugged, kissed, and have weapons on their shoulders (this is the ultimate "I'm the boss" gesture of a dog, so many do not tolerate it.) Others - generally those who are not accustomed to a lot of physical contact from a very young age - Do not feel comfortable with the whole body contact too much and get nervous and agitated if someone persists in trying to embrace.
Another common cause of handling induced aggression is a bad grooming experience: nail clipping and bathing are the two most common causes. When you clip the nails of a dog, is very easy "quick" him - ie, cutting the blood vessel that runs inside the nail. This is extremely painful for a dog, and is a safe way cause a long-term aversion to the Clippers. Being washed is something that many dogs have difficulty dealing with - a lot of owners, when confronted a wild-eyed, half-washed, upset dog, feel that in order to complete the wash they have to stop it by force. "I can" retrain " likes to be handled and prepared? In a word: yes. It's a lot easier if you start from a young age - handle your puppy a lot, you get used to being touched and whole body rubbed. Young dogs generally enjoy handled - is only for adults who have not had much physical contact throughout their lives that sometimes find physical affection difficult to accept. Practice of collecting and feet and touch them with the razor, take practice in the bath (or outside under the faucet - whatever works for you, but hot water is much nicer for the dog of a freezing spray of ice water!), and increase the process throughout with lots of praise and treatment of small occasionally. For an adult dog that may already have had several unpleasant handling / grooming experiences, things are a bit more difficult. It is necessary to undo the damage caused by bad experiences, what you can do by taking things very slowly - with an emphasis on keeping the dog calm. At the moment it begins to show signs of stress, Stop immediately and let you relax.
Try to do all this in a game will give you plenty of praise, pats, and treats. Take things slowly. Do not press too far: if you get nervous, stop. Dogs show aggression for a reason: they are a warning to turn back, or else! If your dog can not seem to accept being groomed, even though the practice is introduced, it is best to hand the job over to professionals.
