how to treat a broken off fingernail?
I just got a dog-grooming job, and on my second day I got most of my fingernail ripped off by a hyper Great Dane. It hurts so so so bad. It's my ring finger and there's still a chunk of nail on there, but I'm in so much pain. I'm a big wimp.
But I don't want to be a big whiny baby when I go back to work on Monday. We bathe dogs all day in dirty soapy water, and it's going to burn soooo bad... It's literally throbbing now, and still oozing a little blood.
What can I do besides neosporin and lots of bandaids to help it heal and grow quickly?
Would the skin toughen up and heal faster if I didn't use any bandaids?
I don't know what to do, but I need it to get drastically better over the weekend. :[
For some initiative, the finger could get infected, leak pus, etc. of not treated as soon as possible, and even then it may be permanently deformed, but you'll probably be fine. Remove all jewelry from the afflicted hand, using sanitised cloth to stem the flow of blood. If the wound covers more that 25% of the nail, home care won't cut it(no pun intended) go see a doctor. Keep the hand above heart level to relieve throbbing, and take Tylenol or Advil(if you aren't allergic) wash it(no pain, no gain) and apply antibiotic bandages(rubbing alcohol would also sterilise the wound, but its more painful) If there is a large bruise, cut, missing flesh, bent or deformed areas, go to the hospital, you can't do anything else at home.
