How to keep chickens or ducks hot?
Cold weather is moving in here in Oklahoma. Until now, the chickens and ducks do not have a problem with it. But we'll be dipping down into the 30s in no time and snow in late December. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP keep hot? Is there some kind of bed that can help? (Continued deatils if that helps ...) Chickens have a 3x3 wooden house with hay inside and actually just go there to lay their eggs (just started, pick you up for lunch). And as for ducks, I'll be putting our Igloo dog house there for them. We can not reach any kind of electric heater in there for them. The hens do not lay eggs and the nest of them still, and ducks have started laying eggs, so no have to worry about the eggs to keep warm. (Immature responses will be given a thumbs down. 10 points of great help!)
Most breeds of chickens can handle the cold, provided they are sheltered from the wind. The ducks should be just as tough. I have kept chickens and guineas in Maine without additional heat. His house in isolated 1-inch foam on the walls and ceiling. It also has about 3 inches of chips and / or straw on the floor. The house is ventilated to allow moisture to escape. I used to leave a light on to provide heat and are stimulated during the winter. Now freeze the eggs throughout the summer for winter. I have 2 troughs for them and exchange them twice a day when it's cold enough to freeze. They will eat more because it takes more energy to keep warm.
