Rawhide Toys - Treat or problems?
Rawhide dog toys are very popular. Found in pet stores, grocery stores and even dollar stores, looks like a sure bet. But that is not so. As the saying goes, caveat emptor (buyer beware).
Rawhide is offering many benefits. Son relatively cheap, dogs enjoy them, and help with all of the teeth and gum health. multiple shapes and sizes are available, so type can be found for any dog, big toy breeds and working dogs alike. Because of these advantages - and the relatively low number of cases where dogs have been wounded - many owners often take their dogs treated leather.
If you decide to give your leather dog issue, it must be noted that there are risks to health. Rawhide is dried animal skins, usually from cow, horse or bull hide. The material is cleaned and processed into crude leather pieces are sold as toys to chew. Processing includes two industrial steps, the first being to clean the membranes, meat, fat, muscle, etc. of the skin. The second step is to clean the hairs on the outside. In addition to the chemicals themselves, another aspect that emerges is leather, especially when related items such as chews and pig ears dried meat is included, are bacterial infections that may be collected by the manipulation of the articles. In 1999, the FDA issued a warning to consumers regarding a medical condition that occurs in Canada, where humans had been showing signs of illness attributed to handling these items. The FDA warned that "these products may pose a risk of bacterial infection such as Salmonella infantis which can cause flu-like symptoms (eg nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea) in normally healthy people but can cause much more serious - even life-threatening injuries in immunosuppressed patients. "Arsenic-based preservatives are used by some manufacturers, although it is not legal for use on leather made in the U.S.
Assuming that the treatment itself not have any toxic chemicals or traces of bacteria, it is safe? Not necessarily. Rawhide question poses a choking hazard and the risk of intestinal problems. When chewed the leather becomes wet and slippery, allowing the dog to swallow more than they can swallow or digest. That creates choking hazards, as well as problems GI obstruction if the piece makes its way to the digestive tract of the dog. gastrointestinal discomfort has also been reported due to difficulties in both digestion and bacteria.
If you decide to give your dog treats rawhide, do so carefully. Be sure to buy products manufactured in the U.S. and to carefully monitor your dog is chewing. Do not let it swallow large pieces of rawhide. Supervision of their time chewing can increase their safety, but there are lots of other toys that are just as fun and much safer, as Kong chew toys that can be filled with tasty treats even better than rawhide.
