i need to know if my dog is pregnant?
my dog has just got her period and she is 5 years old and we think that she has mated with the dog next door. is she to old to have puppies? could it harm her? how can i tell if it's reall early? she is a chocolate lab and the other dog is a mastiff. she is also over weight by 20 pounds she's not really big could this have an effect on anything? i also need to know if it's ok that the other dog is a mastiff. how can i tell if they have mated? and how early can we find out if she is in fact pregnant?
If she just started her heat cycle than she probably is not pregnant. Females are not able to breed usually until the 10th day in the heat cycle. BUT, if she is pregnant chances are she will have problems because of her age and how overweight she is. Older mothers often have dystocia (where the uterus gets so weak that it cannot push out all of the puppies) which almost always results in a c-section. If the mother is overweight then the chances of her having problems with delivery is that much higher.
It is really hard to tell if they have mated without seeing it, and just as hard to tell if she is pregnant. You need to take her to the vet to be spayed. Having puppies at her age is going to be really hard on her, plus older females are prone to getting a pyometra (infected uterus, which can be deadly and the only way to treat it is with emergency surgery). If you do not want to have her spayed, than make sure that your vet knows what is going on so if you need to call them in an emergency they will already have an idea of what is going on. You may also want to save up for a c-section (an emergency one usually costs over $1000 on a big dog) even though she may not need it.
Also, you need to put her on a diet to hopefully get her down to her ideal weight before she delivers. You can just cut her normal food amount down 1/4 (so she will get 3/4 of what she normally does). She does not need to be switched to puppy food until the last 3 weeks of her gestation.
