Confused about whether you should get it done or not?

I'm thinking about getting my dog a microchip in case he had no neck (there is a great number of shelters here so I though I call all of them you never know), but have some concerns as 1. It is read by all scanners? It's "Avid" (I've heard that some were not) 2. Can you get an infection or something? 3. Do they have to go under to do so? Only feels weird to know that will have a chip lol.

1. When my dog ran too far, a UPS driver saw him and he scanned the scanner from UPS and it worked! all scanners designed for this kind of thing can read, yes. 2. No. The chip is the size of a grain of rice and is inserted under the skin, not in any blood vessel or organ tissue. Tattoos and piercings are more likely than microchips for infection and problems. 3. No, it can be inserted quickly with just a needle.
