What to Look For in insulated dog houses
This winter has been surprisingly cold and gave it an unusual amount of snow. Guess I should not surprising, after all, I live in northern Idaho, but the drop was so warm and lasted until November. Furthermore, we live in Idaho, often snowy a little during the night, but hot enough to melt by mid-morning (A difference of 2 hours north of us where the winter is colder and more). We had multiple winters when we never had to shovel! Last year was different, the children had a total of about 14 days of snow and had to make many them during the spring, but he hopes that two unusually bad winters in a row? Well, arrived in December, the temperature dropped drastically, the snow fell and only the dog is moved into the house.
Our dog is old enough and well enough now that he behaved in the interior is fine, but 10 years ago was not the case. We live in a colder climate and renting a home where pets were not allowed inside. We had a young German pastor who faced their first winter and we needed a dog house insulated to keep you comfortable and cozy.
My husband is a kind of DIY man, so did a little research online, made some plans and made his own home alone dog. Now, I'm not going to give here plans to build his own house isolated from the dog, there are plenty of these online, but I'll give some key features to look in the search for dog houses isolated building plans. You may want to buy one in its place, and there are many good quality insulated dog houses already on the market, but the following still applies.
What to look for:
- First, the right size is very important. You want large enough for your dog to be comfortable, but small enough for the dogs body heat is trapped in the room to keep him warm. Here a basic rule: take your dogs height (ground to top of the shoulder) in inches and allows 36 square inches of floor space per inch. So if you have a 24 " height of the dog, then you will have 864 square inches of surface, or an area of 24 "x 36". For the height of the dog house, measure the height of your dog when sitting, and add 1 or 2 inches to ceiling height. A gabled roof is not good, it produces too much air space to keep warm. If you already has a dog house with a gabled roof to see if you can install an insulated ceiling.
- The house must be elevated from the ground, if the insulated dog houses you look at do not offer this feature, you can raise it with bricks. This helps keep the soil more warm and dry.
- A front "hall" with a divider wall that the dog can walk in an inner room is best. Sometimes the wind will blow from unusual directions and the right to blow insulated dog houses, lobby and the divider keep the sleeping area out of the wind. In many models and plans of the divider can be removed for a larger dog house in the summer, when your dog needs to stay cool.
- A roof of the hinge is very convenient. It enables easy access for cleaning the sleeping area and the replacement of the beds, and allows the removal of any wall as mentioned above.
- Insulated dog houses must have interior and exterior walls with some type of insulation the middle.
Good luck in finding or building your own dog home alone. Taking into account the few points mentioned above, care less about his favorite dog because you will be sure to have a dog house warm and welcoming your dog will appreciate during the winter!
