Five Tips for Training a Dog
Obedience training a dog is extremely important for numerous reasons. Principally, domesticated dogs have been bred to be submissive, however the natural instinct will force them to take on the role of pack leader if you do not occupy this position.
Despite instinct, their domestic breeding means that dogs are uncomfortable in the post of pack leader, it is incredibly stressful for them and will ultimately lead to a very unhappy animal. Therefore, the first goal of training is to assert the family hierarchy with you at the top. With that in mind, below are five tips to achieving a well-trained and happy dog.
1. ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. Well, this is not technically true, but it is far easier to begin training your dog while he, or she, is still a puppy. Like any animal, or human, young dogs are constantly learning and are, therefore, apt to grasp commands and instructions very quickly. In addition, while your dog is small, it is wise to handle him, or her, as much as possible. Make sure that you can open your dog’s mouth and touch its paws. The likelihood is that these actions will need to be taken as the dog becomes older and if not familiarized with them at a young age, it can be problematic to perform necessary tasks, such as brushing your dog’s teeth and administering medication.
2. That said, if you choose to welcome an adult dog into your home, do not think that it is impossible to train him, or her. Training an older dog may simply take a little more time and patience, but they can certainly learn. Patience is fundamental to any dog training, but particularly with rescue dogs, which may have had a traumatic past.
3. Many owners offer their dog a treat when he, or she, has performed the correct behavior. While this is effective, some breeds are more likely to gain weight than others and care should be taken to ensure that your dog does not become overweight. Lots of praise and affection will achieve similar results without the calorie intake.
4. While a dog is young and new to your house, you may find it helpful to remove his, or her, favorite toy or food. This may sound like an peculiar thing to do, but it aids in asserting your authority and ensures that you can remove items from your dog when necessary. Typically, when taking a toy or a food bowl, a puppy will merely look at you with expectance. In this instance the toy or food should be returned and the dog should be given praise. However, occasionally a dog can display signs of aggression when something is taken away. If this occurs, then an owner should try to remove items more frequently and for longer periods, so the dog recognizes you as the boss.
5. Some owners find it difficult to get their dog to come when it is called. This is worrying as it can result in danger to the dog. Therefore, before letting your dog run across a field or beach without a leash, it is imperative that you feel confident that your dog will return when called. If your dog is reluctant to come to you, then rather than screaming the dog’s name, you may find it helpful to walk in the opposite direction of the dog. Dogs do not like to be left alone and if your dog thinks you are about to abandon it, he, or she, will come running.
Essentially, an obedient dog is much safer than its more unruly counterparts are. Additionally, a dog that is easy to handle makes for a much better patient, subsequently, any medical conditions can be assessed quickly and efficiently by a veterinarian.
