Realism as a reaction to Romanticism

Introduction

Romanticism emerged in the mid eighteenth century the west of the continent. This art form emerged in the very moment when the industrial revolution. Before the introduction of Romanticism, was not the Age of Enlightenment was characterized policies and standards for fine cultural institutions. Other artists such as Jean Millet and Gustave Courbet also pioneered the realistic movement and became closely associated with the genre of art. The painter latter became famous for representing the realistic aspects of the life in his paintings. Realism was represented in four of his first paintings. These were made from 1848 1850.

Romanticism had begun getting extreme, as it was seen as fiction and distant. They used colors and images that were lavish in nature. Most of his works focused along exotic themes. The works made during the Romantic era were people dressed in fashionable clothes and not have much deep sense of them. This form of expression was very popular during the count of the century, but by the time the century was the middle of the road, people were tired thus ceased to be fashionable. Romantics were known to paint in a way that sample classicalists knew that the painting in accordance with strict standards. But for realism Time began to take root, the two schools of thought were losing ground. Romantic extravagance associated with classicalists while associated with the rigidity and too much formality in their work. (Rubin, 1980)

Realism rejects some notions presented by the Romantics. Its theme was primarily escapist, and this caused the main difference between the two art forms. The same artist was responsible for giving the world the first masterpiece of art in realism. It was a painting of some of the people he saw during the funeral of his uncle. The painting is called "Burial at Ornans" and was made in the month of September during 1848. During the performance of this great painting, Gustave used to real people at the funeral, which was in contrast to what is done among the Romantics often involve actors to impersonate by people who had existed in another time. The painting depicts real people, but was able to demonstrate how life in that city was and how people of that area were too. You could see the artist's family and friends in contradiction with the sadness of witnesses during the funeral. Another artist who was instrumental in the dissemination and popularization of realism was Jean Francois Millet. This artist became famous for the representation of farmers and lifestyle farmers. This was mainly because during the time that most French citizens living in rural areas, it would be more realistic to describe the images of these people instead of historical events or issues that were taken from them. Millet gave a positive image to the relationship between the soil and farmers. In fact, it was this kind of images that somehow glorified work and livelihoods of the poor. This was actually the reason that his work was banned initially, since it was considered by the government in power as a source of encouragement for the people of that area. Millet reflects the nobility and the importance of work. One of his most significant is that in which he has painted three women trying to collect final portions of the harvest. Society ignore these types of workers Quite the opposite was brought into the paint. First, the three women are placed in the center of the room while extending a field can be seen in the background. Millet was thus showing what happens normally in day to day life of people. This was an aspect that was inherently absent from romantic paintings of the previous period. (Rubin, 1997)

The realism of playing a different role in society compared with romanticism. Romanticism came at a time when there were some European nations that had been taken by other nations such as Russia had dominated Poland. This meant that those who had been crushed had to have a sense of patriotism and devotion to their traditions. So the artists use their skills to express the importance of their own culture. Also contrasts with the culture of the dominant countries. This was the reason why most art pieces that time was characterized as a kind of awakening. Artists at that time reinterpreted the traditions and customs to emphasize this aspect. Revolution was also an element of paintings and art of the romantic era. Realism is based on taking the pragmatic view, but it should be noted that the concept of truth is different from one topic to another. Different artists represented their concept of truth in his own way because each one chooses what they believe is true and what is not. In this sense, realist artists have different styles, as a result of these differences. But in relation to this, there is a strong aspect to emphasize realistic consideration when the works. There is a need for some kind of consensus among members of a particular community so that they can agree that thus considered as fact. It is essential for consensus to occur from different individuals have different perceptions and these may be subjects of controversy and disagreement. This is the reason why most works of art by the realists tend to have a surface value. Romanticism left plenty of room to deepen the analysis and interpretation, while realism only carried out the objects and ideas as they are. Realists emphasized the need to establish something as true only if it had widespread support. (Nochlin, 1971)

Another important aspect of realism is the fact that artists have to master the human form. Since there is little room for distortion, a thorough analysis of this issue must be met for basic physical representations that are factual and accurate as possible. Accuracy is key in this way art and this can only be achieved through representation in the form of a convincing way. Realists are also characterized by a fairly good ability to emulate to their surroundings and observations. This does not mean that their works lack certain elements of beauty and harmony, but this is only true if they have observable matter the same traits.

Conclusion

Realism brought new ideas from the established concept of romanticism. This is because it shows the common people and away from the heroes or people with noble intentions. Realism does not show images of events that have their roots in history, but rather focused today. But in my opinion, realism is not completely eradicate the romantic impulses of their work. Although most people are represented in realistic paintings were ordinary, have been represented so extra ordinary. They were an example, and made noble. The latter concept is inherently present in the romantic paintings. Millet and Gustave represents ordinary workers but made it appear that the art of how to use funds that embodies rich. Realism has clear differences of romance, but there are some elements of romance that can still be seen in realism. (Clark, 1999)
