Dogging the Dogs

The Humane Society has gone on record stating that dog bites have become an epidemic. While I agree that the most five million dollars annually bites are recorded epidemic proportions, it makes no sense to categorize as a dog bite epidemic. They are not contagious have been allowed to continue unchecked and there is no connection between the bite of a dog and another.

Furthermore, I reject the premise that dog bites are always deliberate action by the dogs. By contrast, most dog bites are a reaction to some external stimulus. I am not suggesting that biting is a justified reaction, except that the reaction is often explainable. The reasons are that dogs become aggressive and violent.

I concede that sometimes dogs apparent unprovoked attack, but somehow the public gets the message that all dog bites are of this variety. Apparently, the thirst of the media sensations has led them to focus more on the extreme cases of bad dog behavior rather than presenting the whole story.

A more balanced representation of the two unprovoked and provoked attacks by the media would be much fairer to this noble animal. Furthermore, this approach could help educate the public to avoid being bitten by a dog rather than cause them to panic whenever they see an unleashed dog.

Unfortunately, the result of the press of a single-sided usually lower public tolerance and ultimately, extreme killing of an animal species whose history has been one of service and companionship to us.
