Dog Racing Tips - Speed
While passing through the grades in greyhound racing, you will notice that the race times faster and faster. With the occasional stroke of luck, it's safe to say that time is linked to grade. So naturally, when using a speed factor for handicap you have to take into account the degree.
There are many mathematical systems to do that, most of them complicated tables to add and subtract seconds or even fractions second to reach a variant for each grade. I have used all of the method of Beyer dark horses for methods of people you've never heard of. None of them impressed me enough that I continued to use them.
For me, the problem with the use of these tables and methods is that there are so many variables in a career that can affect the speed, which in reality nothing can compare the speed of a dog in a sprint to another dog in a different race reliably.
For example, if a dog is prevented in a race, almost always has a time slower than normal. This seems simple enough, right? But what if the dog is impeded in a stakes race in the end time is a path or near it?
What if the dog has a slower time the other dogs, but a faster time than usually? How do you factor that in with the rest of their careers? Is that dog in a race faster next time without the pace of the race is at stake to push me along? Will you return to the slower speed which shows that for the races is at stake?
What about dogs that are at times of low activity of some positions and post faster times than others? If you are using a mechanical method to calculate the variations of speed, they may lose. So what is the best way to deal with the speed if you want to use it as a factor without complicated tables and math?
Well, many old-fashioned "pencil" handicappers, like myself, use a formula that has been used in horse racing for decades, even centuries. We hope no later than three runs and average them. When I do, let the races where there was interference or difficulty, unless the dog has several lines of problems. It also omits the lines in the days when there was bad weather.
This does not take long. You really do not even need a calculator after you have been doing for some time. I think it works better in higher level races, but you can see if that is true in your favorite song. Keep in mind that speed is only one factor in the handicap greyhound. Do not forget all the other variables that help you win at the dog track.
