Struvite Crystals and Urine Infections
After several months of constant urineinfections and antibacterials and antibiotics and a few struvite crystals Diva my 7 month old border collie has been put on the Royal Canin Urinary S/O dried food diet. At £46 per bag got 14 kilos for the dried food can anyone tell me if it has worked and the struvite crystals have disappeared and disolved and if so did they keep their dog on the diet or just use it until the urine infections and crystal dissolved?
Generally, you keep your dog on a dissolution diet until the urine no longer has traces of crystals. You can have the urine rechecked at the vet. After the urine comes back without crystals, the dog should stay on a maintenance diet to keep the crystals from coming back. Ideally your dog should stay on the diet for the rest of its life. If you don't, the crystals will reform and if your dog gets stones, they could block him from urinating and you will need to get surgery to clear them out. Find a way to pay for the food and keep him on the urinary diet- it's really the best thing for him.
