House Training Puppies: Recognizing, preventing and handling dog aggression
And Mother Nature is pretty wily - it's difficult to counter the power of instinct! But that does not mean that we, as dog lovers and owners, are entirely helpless when it comes to handling our dogs. There is much we can do to prevent aggression from rearing its ugly head in the first place - and even if prevention has not been possible (for whatever reason), there are still steps we can take to recognize and deal with it efficiently. - Different aggression types - There are several different types of canine aggression.
The two most common are: - Aggression towards strangers - Aggression towards family members
You may be wondering why we are bothering the categorization of these things: after all, aggression is aggression, and we want the grass out now, do not waste time with the details - right? Well ... not quite. These two types of aggression stem from very different causes and require different treatment. - Aggression towards strangers - What is it? Is very easy to tell when a dog's nervous around strangers.
He is nervous and alert: either you can not sit still and is constantly fidgeting, leaping at the smallest sound, and pacing around barking and whining, or being veerrrry fact, sitting rock-steady in one place, looking staring at the object of his suspicions (a visitor, the mailman, someone approaches you on the street while he is tied outside a store.)
Why is this? There is a major reason why a dog does not like strange people: he never had the chance to get used to them. Remember, your dog relies 100% on you to broaden his horizons for him: without being taken in a lot of trips to see the world and realize for himself, through consistent and positive experiences that the unknown is not necessarily equal bad news for him, how can you realistically expect to relax in an unfamiliar situation? What I can do about it?
The process of accustoming your dog in the world and all the strange people (and animals) that it contains is called socialization. This is a very important aspect of education your dog is in fact quite difficult to overstate how important it is. Socializing your dog means exposing him from an early age (usually as soon as he had vaccinations) to a wide variety of new experiences, new people and new animals. How does socialization prevent stranger aggression?
When that socialize your dog, you are getting to learn from the experience that new sights and sounds are fun, not fear. It is not enough to expose an adult dog to a crowd of strangers and tell him to "Settle down, Roxy, it's OK" - he has to know it's okay for himself. And he has to do it from puppyhood for the lesson to sink in.
The more types of people and animals are found (babies, children, adolescents, elderly, men, women, wearing uniforms, motorcycle helmets, people carrying umbrellas, etc) in a fun and relaxed, more comfortable and happy - and safe around strangers - that will to be in general. How I can socialize my dog does not develop a fear of strangers? Socializing your dog is pretty easy to do - which is more of a general effort of a specific training regimen.
First, you should take him to puppy preschool. This is a generic term for a series of easy classes group training for puppies (often performed at the veterinary clinic, which has the added benefit of teaching your dog associations positive to the vet!). In a puppy preschool class, about a dozen puppies owners meet with a qualified trainer (often there is at least two trainers present - more the merrier, because it means that you get more one-on-one with a professional) and start to teach your puppy obedience commands basics: sit, stay, and so on. Even though the obedience work is very useful and is a great way to start your puppy on the way to being an adult dog confidence, really the best part of puppy preschool is the play sessions: several times throughout the class, the puppies are encouraged to run off leash and play with each other.
This is an ideal environment to learn good social skills: there are plenty of unknown dogs present (which teaches them to interact with strange dogs), there are plenty of people who do not know today (which teaches them that new faces are nothing to fear), and the environment is safe and controlled (there are at least one coach present certificates to ensure that things get out of control). Socialization does not stop with puppy preschool, though.
It is an effort continuous throughout the life of your puppy, you have to be taken to a lot of new places and environments. Remember not to overwhelm him: start slow and gradually build your tolerance. - Aggression towards family members - There are two common reasons why a dog is aggressive towards members of his own human family: - He is trying to defend something that he thinks his perceived threat (you). This is known as resource protection, and although it may seem innocuous, in fact there are many others around this your dog just trying to keep his kibble to himself. - He is not comfortable with the treatment and handling than it receives from you or other members of family. What protection of resources?
Resource protection is fairly common among dogs. The term refers to behavior over possessive in the name of your dog: for instance, snarling at you if you approach him while eating, or giving you "the eye" (a flinty-eyed, direct stare) if it reaches his hand to take a toy away from him all dogs can be possessive from time to time -. It's in their nature sometimes. possessive over things with no conceivable value: inedible trash, balled up pieces of paper or tissue, old socks. More often, however, resource monitoring becomes a problem more elements with a very real and understandable value: food and toys. Why is this happening? It comes down to the question of domination. Allow me a moment to explain this concept: dogs are pack animals.
This means that we are accustomed to a highly structured environment: in a dog-pack, each animal is classified in a hierarchy of position and power (or "domain") in relation to all other animals. Each animal is aware of the basis of any animal, which means he knows specifically how to act in a given situation (whether to turn back, either to push the issue, whether or not the muscle of another lawn, etc, etc). For your dog, family environment is no different to the environment of the dog-pack. Your dog has ranked each member of the family, and is own perception of where he ranks in that environment.
This is where it gets interesting: if your dog perceives himself as above on the social totem of family members, they will get bold. If he really has an inflated sense of self-importance, which will begin to act aggressively. Why? Because dominance and aggression are the exclusive rights of a superior animals classified. Not weaker ever show aggression or act dominant a senior animal (the consequences would be terrible, and he knows that! He) Resource protection is a classic example of dominant behavior: only a dog highest ranking (a "dominant" dog) would act aggressively in defense of resources.
To put it plainly: if it was clear to your dog that is not in fact, the family leader, who had not even dream of trying to prevent you from taking his food or toys - because a lower-ranking dog (him) will always be according to what the senior dogs (you and your family) say. So what I can do about it? The best treatment for controlling behavior, aggressive hard work, frequent obedience, which will highlight your authority over your dog.
In just two sessions of fifteen minutes a day to make it very clear to dog that you are the boss, and it's worth doing what you say. You can make that fact clear to him by rewarding him (with treats and praise) for obeying a command, and isolating him (putting him in "time out", either outdoors or in a room by himself) for misbehavior. - If you are not completely sure do it yourself, you may wish to consider enlisting the help of a qualified dog-trainer.
- Practice your understanding of canine psychology and communication so you can understand what you are trying to say - this will help you cut any dominant behavior in the bud, and to communicate with their authority so more effectively - Train regularly: keep obedience sessions short and productive (no more than fifteen minutes - maybe two or three of these per day). Why is my dog to be handled? All dogs have different thresholds for treatment.
Some dogs, like a lot of hugs, and are perfectly content being hugged, kissed, and have weapons on their shoulders (this is the last "I'm the boss" gesture of a dog, so many of them will not tolerate. She) Others - usually those who are not accustomed to a lot of physical contact from a very young age - do not feel comfortable with the whole body contact too much and get nervous and agitated if someone persists in trying to embrace.
Another common cause of handling-induced aggression is a bad grooming experience: nail clipping and bathing are two common culprits. When you clip a dog's nails, it's easy "quick" him - ie, cutting the blood vessel that runs inside the nail. This is very painful for a dog, and is a litmus test as to cause a long-term aversion to the Clippers. Being washed is something that many large dogs have difficulty to deal with - many of the owners, when confronted with a wild look, half-washed, upset dog, feel that in order to complete the washing must be stopped by force.
This only adds to the sense of dog of panic, and reinforces his impression of a wash as something to be avoided at all costs - if necessary, to defend it with a display of teeth and neck. Can you "train" likes to be handled and hair? In a word: yes. It is much easier if you start from an early age - handle your puppy a lot, you get used to being touched and rubbed all over. Young dogs generally enjoy being handled - is the only older who have not had much physical contact throughout their lives that sometimes find physical affection difficult to accept.
Pick up your feet and practice playing with the winch, practice lead him in the bath (or outside, under the faucet - whatever works for you, but hot water is much more pleasant for a dog from a aerosol freezing cold water!), and increase the process along with a lot of praise and the occasional small treat.
For a dog old who already has had several unpleasant handling / grooming experiences, things are a little harder. It is necessary to undo the damage caused by bad experiences can be done taking things very slowly - with an emphasis on staying calm dog.
At the moment he begins to show signs of stress, stop immediately and allow you to relax. Try to do the whole thing in a game will give you plenty of praise, pats, and treats. Take it easy. Do not press too further: if you get nervous, stop. Dogs show aggression for a reason: they are a warning to turn back, or else! If your dog can not seem to accept being arranged, however much you practice, it is best to hand the job to professionals.
Your vet will clip his nails for you (make sure you tell the first thing that becomes aggressive when the clippers come out, so your veterinarian can take precautions!). As for washing and brushing goes, the dog grooming business is a flourishing industry: for a small fee, you can get your dog washed, cut, polished, and everything you need experienced professionals (again, that Make sure you tell them about your dog's reaction to the first experience!)
