A blind dog in my house
First, let me say that my dog became my dog.
Dukie belonged to the son of my husband. It was a birthday gift to my stepson for his girlfriend. Unfortunately, my stepson was not able to raise a dog, so I gave him my husband.
Dukie is a black Labrador, a large black labrador but poor. He is adorable, friendly and fun. He thrived in our house because there were two dogs, a golden retriever and a black lab others.
All of them had only nice. No time just play fights all the time. I started noticing Dukie bumping into things, get "lost" when out and running around. He had a bad eye and he has hurt in a club when he was a puppy. Anyway, I took him to the vet, and once he left outside the belt into the examination room that quickly became a wall.
Well, I got really scared at this time. The vet check it out, and Low and behold, my Dukie was blind. I could not believe it. My vet sent me to an eye specialist, and sure enough Dukie was suffering from a degenerative eye disease. I panicked, I thought so, now I have to leave.
My eye doctor sent me back to my own vet, and forwarded the information him. The vet I calmed down and said no way you have to put it to sleep. He said: "Look how well he has handled his blindness so far," And the vet was reason. I mean, I did not even know he was totally blind.
So began our life with a blind dog in our house. The thing is, if you do not move the furniture around too much, and pretty well stay where they are, do not even know that your dog is blind. At least not with the Duke. Walk through the house like he is king. He enters and leaves the door of his dog and walks around the back yard no problem.
Duke take out for car rides, which he loves, and for long walks and bike rides. Although no longer bike rides, I realized more and more that do not like the speed. I think that makes him feel unbalanced.
Duke Loves Company, he becomes hyper and excited when they come good. I guess because I do not see them, you need to build a law against them. But few minutes after greeting them, just goes and does his thing.
When it does tend to come "lost", he loses his sense of where is. But he finds it again quickly enough.
He still gets along well with our other dogs, and our neighbors dog. However, and does not like strange dogs come and say hi to him. Suppose to be blind and not see the other dog poses a threat to him. So far, that has been his only reaction refusal to be blind.
When I move furniture or new furniture make sure I get to introduce Duke to these changes. It adapts very quickly.
When walking, I forget who is blind, and I can have a tendency to get into it fences, hedges and poles. Duke is the perfect dog to take walks. Do not pull, the heels and do not see cats or squirrels on our walks.
He is a favorite with children. He loves children and is very good with them. And, most importantly, my dog husband. My husband has advanced MS, and spend hours with him Dukie. Often steals sofa my husband. When my husband gets in his wheelchair to go aa then Dukie bathroom hops up in his bed. Duke has its own mini sofa next to my husband, but at Duke, which is not the same thing at all. It's a job to get what the couch again. Cookies help. The two have become inseparable companions.
I would recommend a blind dog any time and from my own experience. Duke had been a wonderful part of our family, and he has not been any problem at all. Therefore, if you dog is going blind, or have the opportunity to adopt a blind dog, no doubt, also make great pets. My Duke still does.
