Deaf dog training nightmare! HELP?
I recently got a 10 month old Great Dane that is deaf. After the first week of hell we decided to get one of those zapper collars. I didn't like the idea in first place put I was desperate. Now, he is doing better with training. But, when we leave the house we lock him in our upstairs which is all open rooms. How do I get him to stop laying on my bed, pulling the couch cushions off and literally ripping my expensive blinds off the wall (was so mad!) I spent all my extra money on the zapper so I cant afford a crate. I have zapped him when I catch him on the bed. And I take him around to each bad thing he has done and told him NO! Any better ideas anyone??
As a dog trainer myself, I can not stress how terrible those zapper collars are. The reason they use them in police training/other specialized animal fields is because those people are specifically TRAINED to know how to work them in a not cruel way.
I'm glad that it has worked for you so far, but I would suggest you don't use it anymore. It only confuses the dog.
10 months is still a puppy, and since your dog is deaf it just makes matters worse. Just like a little kid, your dog is going to misbehave.
My advice? Get a crate in the meantime and then a dog trainer. That is the best thing you can do in this situation. You will only need one or two lessons before you will master the art.
If you cannot afford this, then buy those plastic baby gates at WalMart and gate of your dog. (provide food, water, and toys, and a mat for when you leave the house) Then, save up until you can get a dog trainer.
Remember, just like a deaf human, your dog will respond to sign language. Use your hands for comands.
An example would be for "Sit." For the first time, get some treats, and point your index finger at the dog. Then, reach down and push your dog's behind on the ground. Give it a treat. Continue doing this until your dog learns that the finger means sit.
Good luck! And stop using that damn shock collar!
