Equine dermatophilosis
Dermatophilosis is a condition that horses can contract. Dermatophilosis is a condition commonly known as rot rain, rain scald, and streptothricosis. Dermatophilosis horses appearing in the lower leg is often called dew poisoning. Although you can dermatophilosis be seen around the country is more common in the southeastern U.S. states where the weather is often wet, warm and humid.
Dermatophilosis is most commonly seen in mammals such as horses, cows, sheep, and goats are also commonly affected. Also dermatophilosis has been diagnosed in pigs, dogs and cats, although the condition is not so common. Some rare cases of humans being affected with dermatophilosis also been diagnosed.
The younger the horse most likely contractDermatophilosis.
Horse owners who have dealt with cases of dermatophilosis say that its horses had scabs or bumps that hive as it was about a quarter inch in diameter, these hives are typically easy to peel or rub. Although these lesions are most often seen covering the horses hip area is not uncommon to see all the horse's body
dermatophilosis affected.
Many owners Horse assume that the rain rot is caused by a fungus. Dermatophilus congolensis is interesting because it shares with charastics both fungi and bacteria. They are wrong. Dermatophilosis is actually caused by an organism called Dermatophilus congolensis. In horses of Dermatophilus congolensis works enter the horse hair follicle
axis. Once is in the horses hair shaft can be seen in the form of a large hive. When these hives are removed from the skin of horse owners can see several (literally dozens and dozens) of hairs embedded in each large package. Due to damage hair Dermatophilus congolensis following the elimination of these hives does not seem upset or pain horse
anyway. Once the scabs / hives are removed homeowners can see the skin underneath the hives usually pink and oozing pus yellow.
Horses affected by dermatophilosis not seem in pain nor do they appear to be embarrassed by their condition. The only time the condition appears be painful is if the affected area is covered with a saddle. Owners who have a horse that has signs in his spine dermatophilosis should refrain from traveling until the condition is resolved.
Typically, vets do not recommend using any ointments to treat because the ointments dermatophilosis simply add moisture to the affected areas of skin. One of the old methods for the treatment of dermatophilosis is an exchange of those affected are oil used motor (for a little engine oil cooler reason not to treat the affected area). Most homeowners and bathroom
horses with antibacterial shampoos.
Dermatophilosis is contagious. If you have a horse that has been affected to try to separate from their pasture mates. Make sure you keep your supplies toilet separate from other horses. Do not use the leg wraps, saddle blankets, splint boots, and halters in any other horses. If you have to use other equipment horses sure to disinfect all equipment before it touches the skin of another horse. Maintenance of equipment such as leg wraps and blankets will help prevent dry a second outbreak of dermatophilosis.
Because the skin has been affected with dermatophilosis is no hair that is prone to sunburn. Instead of exchanging the bald solar filter that adds moisture to the skin of horse owners who keep their horses out to use a piece of flying to protect your horse from UV rays. The blanket should be washed regularly to kill Dermatophilus
congolensis.
