Liu Wei Artworks, Paintings and Exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery
Liu Wei's practice is unique, varied. The video work, installation, drawing, sculpture, and painting, there is no stylistic tendency which ties his work together. Rather Liu perceives the artist's role as a responsibility of all, expression uncensored, tied to neither ideology nor form. Throughout the work of Liu, is a compromise with peripheral identity in the broader context of culture, her works often describe a feeling of excess, corruption, and reflecting the cultural anxiety. In aggression of China, you do not find a painter and a sculptor, and artist video, but rather an artist who works in painting, sculpture, photography, video and (not?) why the performance at all at the same time. Liu Wei in Beijing to select works for my show in Turin, not only beautiful landscape paintings but also architectural models of famous buildings like the Cathedral of St. Peter and the Empire State Building, from the rubber used to make fake dog bones. In Europe, an artist seeking inspiration, both in a pet shop and Gerhard Richter's early work will most likely be dismissed for lack of a consistent point of view.
Wei Liu paintings has been to characterize general feeling the time of discomfort. With works by famous New Generation (1990), Liu recycled the iconic image of Mao in an ironic interpretation of the current state China post Cultural Revolution. Liu has been active in exhibitions such as New exhibitions of art from China, Post-1989 Hong Kong, Sydney and Vancouver, 1998-1999 exhibition Inside Out: New Chinese Art, New York and San Francisco. Liu has also participated at the 46th Venice Biennale in 1995 and has had solo exhibitions at Jack Gallery Tilton in New York, USA in 1999 and Urs Meile Gallery, Switzerland, in 2004. The word to the right of Chinese art now is "Buy!" but was not convinced that Westerners really understand what is happening there. Ten years ago, very few Chinese artists, like Chen Zen or Huang Yong Ping, appeared on the radar screen West, satisfying a certain outdated "Orientalist" craving for some collectors. People like Uli Sigg, former Swiss ambassador to China, which has about 1,500 pieces of Chinese and Asian art in its collection, and another Swiss citizen, Lorenz Helbling, who opened his gallery, ShanghART in China more than a decade ago, are reaping the benefits of their foresight. But now Western collectors and dealers are descending on China like a swarm of annoying and aimless flies. In reality, today's burgeoning Chinese art world depends very marginally, in any case, on the establishment gallery in New York and London. Large crowds may jam the Miami Basel and Frieze art fairs, but those numbers are nothing compared to the potential size of the art market within China itself.
