You Can Fight Mother Nature: 2008 Edition
September is here, you know what that means? No, I'm not talking about support for school shopping. No, I'm not talking for the ultimate summer vacation. I refer to the hurricanes! According to the AOML, August, September and October are the peak months of activity hurricanes in the Atlantic. The AOML has predicted that 2008 will be above average. But even if you decide to ignore the predictions, remember that a single hurricane is all you need to endanger your family or rob you of your investments.
Are you ready? Think you do not have to worry about of hurricanes? Read and find out!
Who is affected by the hurricanes? You do not have to live in Florida or New Orleans may be affected by the hurricanes. Did you know that in 1938 there was a hurricane that struck the Northeast that left 600 dead? And not have to have an impact directly from a hurricane to suffer tremendous damage. Storm systems caused by hurricanes often cause power outages, flooding and wind damage to navigation states. Do not assume you will not be affected. These tips will prepare for other disasters, so read on.
Are you covered adequate insurance? When was the last time you reviewed or updated policies with your insurance company / agent? Could be well worth your time to do this in a couple of weeks. While you're there, you should also ask about coverage of the umbrella if you have not done. As its name implies, this is a general use policy that provides additional protection beyond their existing policies. Insurance is a relatively low cost that can make a big difference, if you must file a claim (see Tell me, TMA below for more information.)
Do you have an evacuation plan well thought out? You can not use a comprehensive plan created by someone else. Personalize yours to fit your needs. Here are some things to consider:
- Strategy Check out: Make sure everyone knows the fastest way out of the house in case of fire or other natural disaster. Second really counts!
- Meeting Place: Have a meeting place agreed. The quicker you can do a count, the faster you can move to locate any person who does not work out. Has 2 locations meeting place - a home right outside (sidewalk or driveway) and the other outside of your property (Friend of the house, the library or school)
- Contact: Specify a person to be the "partner." If your family gets separated, and can not get one of those places, have one person be a communicator between groups to avoid confusion and missed calls. Make sure everyone knows the contact number phone!
Do you know how to prepare for a storm, here are some general tips for others think. If a storm is forecast, make sure:
- Having a full tank of gas. The gas stations can not pump gas if no electricity.
- Sure your outdoor items that will not turn on the air and harm you or someone else.
- Stock your disaster supply kit. In a severe storm, which could be well worth the effort. Include drinking water (at least gallon of drinking water per person per day), food (canned, dried and other non-perishables that do not require cooking, water or special preparation - and do not forget manual can opener), prescriptions and medications (three days' supply recommended), first aid kit, flashlight, flashlights with batteries and radio AM / FM batteries.
- a pet. Prepare supplies bag not forget your petsl - they'll need food, water, medicine, and belts.
I certainly hope that the peak hurricane season just "blow for us" without incident, but it never hurts to be prepared for what may be ahead.
