Are there shops in the U.S. often have shelter dogs?

I know that at some pet supply stores like Pet important Smart, cats have some local wildlife shelters almost all the time. I was wondering if anyone has that kind of thing with dogs, and if so, what stores? I'm writing a report, in case you were wondering. Thanks!
