Giardia and your new puppy
What is Giardia?
Giardia is a microscopic parasite that form cysts. These cysts adhere to the surface of infected dogs, or they can float freely in the mucous membrane and pass from the dog when it is removed (poop). Once approved, the cysts can survive for several months out of the animal if sufficient moisture.
How can my puppy comes into contact with these cysts?
If your puppy to share a cage with another dog that was infected with Giardia, chances are they eat the cysts by licking the fur of infected dogs, soil or the surrounding area where the infected dog was kept, or could have been eating feces containing Giardia cysts. Once ingested, the cysts were opened in the new host, thus repeating the cycle of infection.
Can my new puppy get Giardia although it has not been around an infected dog?
Yes Giardia can also be found in streams or other water sources and a dog left in dirty conditions can actually reinfect causing a vicious circle.
What kind of treatments are available for Giardia?
If you suspect that your new puppy may have Giardia, it is always best to schedule a visit to your veterinary clinic. Be prepared for your visit by collecting of a stool sample to take with you. Using the sample to the offer, your veterinarian can perform the necessary tests to determine if your dog has really Giardia, or other disorder. If Giardia is diagnosed, some of the treatments available today include: metronidazole (Flagyl), furazolidone (Neftin) Tinadazole, fenbendazole (Panacur) and Albendazole (Valbanzen). Your veterinarian will recommend the best treatment for your new puppy.
My dog is not infected by now, but how I can avoid coming into contact with Giardia?
The best way to prevent contact wit and the spread of this parasite, is to ensure that your new puppy, drink possible sources of contaminated water such as rivers, streams, and stagnant or standing water. Another way to help eliminate the risk of Giardia is to keep your pet away of pets that do not know, that could be infected. Popular places like dog parks, dog beaches, and other meeting areas for pets can be fun, but worth the health risk of your puppy?
