Classic Pottery Bookends from famous makers
Southeast Ohio was once home to many famous potters. Even today, names like Hull, McCoy and Robinson Ransbottom still echo through the valley of the Muskingum River. ceramic bookends are some of the most collectible of these potters known.
The area around the Muskingum River Valley provided the perfect combination of natural resources including a source of fine-grained clay. They are often along coal seams underground dotting the landscape, the clay gave birth to more than fifty manufacturers of ceramics. The abundance of coal provided a great source of energy to fuel the furnaces that were needed to fire the clay.
The good quality of clay found in and around cities like Zanesville, Crooksville and Roseville produced porcelain and quality. Events are held annually to celebrate and commemorate the rich traditional pottery, drawing thousands of collectors and pottery enthusiasts.

Most of the kilns that produce some of the worlds most recognizable pottery are cold, or have disappeared forever. Dozens of producers of ceramic tiles that once dotted the landscape of southeastern Ohio have been reduced to a handful.
The Internet has provided collectors around the world with the opportunity to gain an appreciation of these pieces of American culture. As with any ceramic bookends collection, buyer should always beware of fakes and imitations.
